Private Bus conductors of Sri Lanka
A disappointed conductor |
I have been observing things to write about the Bus conductors
for many years. Today I have got time to write about the Ugly truth of Sri Lanka’s private bus conductors.
The majority of
conductors are uneducated, unkind and arrogant males. Passengers face a lot of
problems daily when they commute from home to work or school because of the
conductors. Some private bus conductors never ever give a ticket even
through the government has implemented rules to give a ticket and notices are
stuck on buses indicating fine is for not having a ticket for the destination
is Rs.250 + double of the destination fare. When a passenger asks a ticket they
don’t wait to say many things. Sometimes they say ‘no need a ticket.’
They often over-charge from passengers.
When passengers ask a ticket they change the distance and
give them over charged ticket. Just imagine if you get on from Negombo and get
off from Waikkal, normal fare for that distance is Rs.27 but they get Rs. 28 or
even Rs. 30. When they are asked a ticket, they change the distance from
Negombo to Bolawatta or Nainamadama and give you Rs.30 ticket.
It’s funny that Conductors ask from passenger “Don’t you
have coins?” Why don’t you bring coins? J
We have to bring a huge collection of coins to get rid off from these
questions. If they do work there, they should have coins with them.
Struggles between Passengers and conductors are usually occurred.
Some conductors are hit by passengers due to their ruthless
behavior. Some passengers too are hit or abused by conductors. Specially,
innocent women are targeted by these idiots. Actually, I shouldn’t call them
like that way but I couldn’t find an appropriate word to address them.
If you are a boy, jump!! :-P
On some routes, Small buses such as Rosa and Tata are occupied.
Conductors there are the worst. Hardly, you will be able to find a good
conductor. To get passengers they stop everywhere breaking road rules too but
to get off from the bus passengers have to jump from the bus. They only slow
down the speed and ask passenger to jump into front. Conductors even inform bus
drivers saying ‘there’s only one to get off’. If the passenger doesn’t jump,
they say many things. Like if a young male,
“You are a boy, aren’t you?” “Are you a woman?”
You are judged on what you wear!! :D
Some conductors respect people who are in fancy clothes.
They politely say “Mahaththaya poddak passata yanavada”? “Can you go little to
the back of the bus?” If you are in just a Blue T-shirt and pants, they say
“oya nil pata t-shirt eka adhagena inna malli yannako passata”? “That fellow
wearing blue T-shirt, go to the back, will you?” Normally, during rush hours
buses are fully packed. Even you can’t keep your foot on the bus properly.
Tip…… Tip….. Tip…
Bus conductors save each and every coin for their pocket
money every day. If you like to see what I am saying, please have a look in the
front of the bus near to driving seat. There’s a small box or tin. There are
many things to talk about conductors. But I suppose you might have witnessed
and experienced those. I should give praise for a few good conductors who
provide pretty good service.
My work is not intended to condemn conductors totally. But an
adequate supervision and some training must be given to them to uplift their morals
and the service they offer. Then we may have got a better service from them.
